The Opportunity:
High Latitude is seeking an Energy Modeling Specialist. This position requires a motivated self-starter who can work effectively on their own as well as within a small team. Outside of the High Latitude team, this position will need to coordinate and work with various levels of government, First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities and governing bodies, utilities, funding bodies, regulatory bodies, and third-party consulting firms.
This position is offered as an office-based or remote position, depending on the candidate. Our offices are located in Whitehorse, Yukon, and Iqaluit, Nunavut.
Employment Status: Permanent Full Time – 30-40 hours per week
Wage Range: $47 – $50 per hour, based on experience

Job Description:
Typical responsibilities of this job include:
Collaborate with the Technical Manager and the HILAT team to undertake detailed energy modeling and design work for microgrids across northern Canada.
Collaborate with the Technical Manager and the HILAT team to undertake detailed energy modeling and design work for renewable energy penetration scenarios on integrated electrical systems.
Perform multi-objective analysis and decision-making for smart grids
Collect and clean data from a variety of sources (utilities, buildings, wind and solar measurement equipment)
Take into consideration the unique challenges of operating in Canada’s north when modeling and assisting with the design of projects
Cooperate with the HILAT team and 3rd parties to complete detailed costing and corresponding financial analysis.
Conduct research and provide literature reviews on established and emerging renewable energy technologies.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor degree in Engineering – preference for Masters or PhD
Proficiency with various programming languages including but not limited to Python/R, C++, etc.
Proficiency with various renewables and grid modeling platforms including but not limited to standard PV and wind modeling software, PVsyst, Helioscope, HOMER, MATLAB, OpenDSS, PSCAD, etc.
Proficiency with data analysis and visualization, machine learning, and optimization platforms including but not limited to Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, Statsmodels, Matplotlib, Plotly Dash, Pandas, Pyomo, etc.
Strong working knowledge of energy modeling in the context of renewable energy integration into microgrids and/or integrated grids, dispatch strategies in power systems, load flow analysis, and fault studies.
Strong working knowledge of modeling renewable systems’ performance in Northern weather conditions
Strong written and oral communication skills including good technical writing skills – publication experience an asset
Ability to interpret data and clearly communicate technical results to audiences that may or may not have technical backgrounds
Preference given to candidates who have AutoCAD and electrical drawing experience
Understanding of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and control systems will be considered an asset
Ability to prioritize projects and tasks within tight timelines
Attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Willingness to learn new skills and apply themselves to new research areas
Experience living or working in Canada’s north is an asset
Additional Requirements:
Legally entitled to work in Canada
Some travel to remote communities will be required.
